LONDON, ON , July 25, 2022 /CNW/ - Improving energy efficiency in our communities is an important part of our toolkit to fight climate change. It will help us exceed our climate goals, lower emissions where people live and work, and provide opportunities for Canadians to be part of building a clean and prosperous future that leaves no one behind.
Today, Peter Fragiskatos , Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced an investment of over $2 million to three organizations that are advancing energy efficiency in buildings in Ontario .
Over $1.3 million to Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology, in London , to retrofit the Kestrel Court Student Residence, a 25-year-old complex, into a net zero-energy facility. Fanshawe College also contributed $1.25 million , bringing the combined project cost to more than $2.5 million .
$365,000 to Indwell, in Woodstock , to support the construction of Blossom Park Apartments, a new, 34-unit, high-performing multi-unit residential building using the BuildSMART prefabricated envelope technology to help inform local and national net-zero energy codes. The Canada Green Building Council, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Oxford County and Passive House Canada also funded the project, bringing the total cost to more than $7.3 million .
$350,000 to Enwave Energy Corporation, in Markham , to support the development of the Enwave Geothermal Community Energy System, which will supply low-carbon geothermal heating and cooling to 300 residential homes. The project also received financial support from City of Markham , Mattamy Homes and The Atmospheric Fund for a total project cost of $818,367 .
Federal funding is being provided through Natural Resources Canada's Green Infrastructure – Energy Efficient Buildings Program. This program supports improvements to the design, renovation and construction of our homes and buildings. The government is advancing the development and implementation of building codes for existing buildings and new net-zero-energy–ready buildings through research, development and demonstration projects in London and across the nation.
The Government of Canada is also developing a Green Buildings Strategy, which will create local jobs and help Canada move toward a resilient, net-zero emissions buildings sector by 2050. The Strategy will be focused on increasing the rate of building retrofits, ensuring buildings are resilient and net-zero ready from the start, and supporting systems change for the buildings sector of the future. Further engagement on the Strategy with partners such as provinces and territories, Indigenous governments and municipalities will take place before it is finalized in 2023.
Through efforts such as these, the federal government is creating sustainable jobs, building a clean energy future and charting a path toward net-zero emissions by 2050.
"Reducing emissions from buildings is a key part of our efforts to combat climate change. Our government is pleased to support today's investment in energy efficiency in Ontario , which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower costs to residents and improve building resilience for folks in London , Woodstock and Markham . Congratulations to all of those involved."

"We're thankful for Natural Resources Canada's support for this project because it allowed us to fully embrace the learning curve of adopting high-efficiency energy performance standards. This funding helped cover energy monitoring and performance-related technologies, track the results of design decisions, and figure out where real-world results match up (or don't) with the modelled assumptions. Not only have we lowered our tenants' energy bills, we've also been able to permanently reduce our GHG emissions while creating beautiful places where people live and thrive."
Graham Cubitt Director of Projects and Development, Indwell
"We're pleased to receive this very generous investment in our Geothermal Community Energy System, a system that creates a path for new-build single-family homes to achieve net zero. A development of this scale required partners who have the aspiration to do something different, and our partners — Mattamy Homes Canada, City of Markham , The Atmospheric Fund and Natural Resources Canada — all brought their support and expertise to this project. This system, which is now operational, is not only good for homeowners but also better for the planet. We are proud to bring our ambition, passion and expertise in designing, building and operating innovative and sustainable solutions to this project."

As a cost-of-living crisis with no end in sight sends shockwaves through Europe, deals in the region's retail and consumer-products industries have slowed dramatically - even more so than in other sectors, data shows. Record inflation around the world has changed the way people shop, with many families trading down to cheaper private label products instead of the key brands that the likes of Unilever, Procter & Gamble and Nestle advertise so heavily. In Europe, amid uncertainty around the consumer goods and retail industries - and with a potential recession looming - corporate buyers and sellers are finding it hard to agree on valuations, according to six bankers and M&A lawyers at major firms.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed sweeping legislation on Thursday to subsidize the domestic semiconductor industry as it competes with Chinese and other foreign manufacturers, a victory for President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats hoping to keep their slim majority in Congress in November midterm elections. Passage sends the bill to the White House, where Biden is expected to sign it into law as soon as early next week. The Senate passed the "Chips and Science" act with bipartisan support on Wednesday, after more than a year of effort.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden's campaign trail promise to increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy as part of a battle against glaring income inequality in the United States got an unexpected boost on Wednesday. Early proposals to increase tax rates from Biden and his fellow Democrats hit a brick wall in Congress after Republicans -- and some Democrats -- opposed them. Biden has often said in office that companies should instead pay a "fair share," a contrast to deference to private markets begun by Republicans with former President Ronald Reagan's election in 1980, and buoyed by rounds of tax cuts and deregulation, by both parties.
OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canada on Thursday welcomed a deal reached by Democratic U.S. senators to back a bill that includes an expansion of tax credits for electric vehicles produced in North America that does not discriminate against those manufactured in Canada. A previous version of the bill presented by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration included tax credits that would have favored American-based manufacturers, sparking furious Canadian lobbying in Washington to get it changed. The bill had been blocked until late Wednesday, when Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and fellow Democratic Senator Joe Manchin reached agreement on a revamped version that instead foresees tax credits for "North American" electric vehicles, or EVs.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — U.S. consumers will finally get the chance to try avocados from Jalisco after 25 years in which neighboring Michoacan has been the only Mexican state authorized to send the green fruit to the U.S. market. That just may help with prices, which have soared this year to over $2 per fruit amid a dip in production in Michoacan. Growers and packers in Jalisco, just northwest of Michoacan, expressed hope that their state can provide more consistent production levels and stability for
Nissan Motor Co on Thursday said it was "cautiously optimistic" after posting a 14% drop in quarterly operating profit as the semiconductor shortage gradually eases and COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai are lifted. Nissan has taken steps to secure inventory levels with suppliers in the short term and replace custom made semiconductors with general purpose chips over the medium-term, said Chief Operating Officer Ashanti Gupta, adding that the situation is "improving". All of Nissan's suppliers in China have restarted operations at full capacity, the executive added.
The U.S. economy shrank for a second straight quarter, data released on Thursday showed, amplifying an ongoing debate over whether the country is, or will soon be, in recession. The 0.9% annualized rate of decline in U.S. gross domestic product in the second quarter followed a 1.6% drop in the first quarter. Although the "two-quarter" definition is handy for analysts, journalists and the general public, it is not how economists think about business cycles.
The Government of Canada and partners will be making a major announcement related to housing.
(Reuters) -Hershey Co said on Thursday it would fall short of meeting demand for the all-important Halloween and Christmas holiday seasons this year, blaming a scarcity of raw ingredients and difficulties in securing suppliers. Pandemic-induced global supply chain disruptions and the Russia-Ukraine war have crunched supplies of cocoa, edible oil and other food ingredients, pinching production lines of packaged food companies around the world. Hershey Chief Executive Officer Michele Buck said those issues, along with the company's focus on meeting demand during non-holiday periods, would lead to a likely shortage during Halloween, but added that sales will still top last year.
Argentina's international bonds rose on Friday but remain near historic lows after President Alberto Fernandez's launched a "superministry" designed to coordinate economic policy, though analysts warned of uncertainties. Fernandez appointed veteran politician Sergio Massa, who heads the lower house of Congress for the ruling Peronist coalition, to the new role overseeing economic, manufacturing and agricultural policy. A new economic roadmap will be key to Massa's success as the country's third Economy Minister in a month, analysts said.

LENORAH, Texas (AP) — To the naked eye, the Mako Compressor Station outside the dusty West Texas crossroads of Lenorah appears unremarkable, similar to tens of thousands of oil and gas operations scattered throughout the oil-rich Permian Basin. What’s not visible through the chain-link fence is the plume of invisible gas, primarily methane, billowing from the gleaming white storage tanks up into the cloudless blue sky. The Mako station, owned by a subsidiary of West Texas Gas Inc., was observed
Postmedia chairman Paul Godfrey is stepping down from his role at the end of the year, the company announced Thursday. Current board member Jamie Irving will step into the job at the start of 2023. Irving has sat on the company's board since April, when Postmedia acquired Brunswick News Inc., the media arm of the Irving family empire, for $16.1 million in cash and shares. Godfrey will serve as a special adviser to the board and CEO following the end of his term as chair. He was the founding CEO
(Reuters) -Procter & Gamble Co delivered quarterly earnings that missed estimates on Friday and forecast lower sales growth, citing surging transportation and commodity costs, consumer cutbacks and retailer reluctance to hike prices. P&G shares fell as much as 6% in the morning as the company missed quarterly earnings estimates for the first time in at least five years, according to Refinitiv data. Chief Financial Officer Andre Schulten warned in a call with media that P&G, a bellwether for consumer products, is seeing "some resurgence" of shoppers buying cheaper store brand items in some categories.
(Reuters) -Ray-Ban parent EssilorLuxottica saw sales growth slow in North America in its latest quarter, raising concerns about its exposure to recession in the United States and offsetting an improvement in its operating margin. The Franco-Italian company whose brands also include Oakley and Varilux said its adjusted operating margin rose by 100 basis points to 18.4% in the six months to June 30, driven by its upscale brands. "The main driver of that margin expansion for the first half was very much our price mix," finance chief Stefano Grassi said on a call with analysts, pointing to new product launches and the strength of its luxury and branded lens portfolios.
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -Mexican distiller Becle, better known as the parent company of the popular Jose Cuervo tequila brand, posted a 58.6% jump in second-quarter net profit on increased demand for the spirit across all regions except the United States and Canada, the company said on Thursday. Becle's net profit rose to 1.40 billion Mexican pesos ($69.5 million). Revenue for the company, whose portfolio also includes alcoholic beverage brands such as Maestro Dobel, Hangar 1 and Kraken, climbed 18.9% from a year earlier to 11.33 billion pesos as prices increased throughout the distiller's portfolio.
(Reuters) -AbbVie Inc has agreed to pay up to $2.37 billion to resolve thousands of U.S. lawsuits against its Allergan unit over the marketing of opioid painkillers, state officials announced on Friday. If finalized, the deal could end more than 3,000 lawsuits by state and local governments around the country. "We've worked hard to get the best result for Americans harmed by the opioid crisis, and it's rewarding to take another step in the right direction," Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, who led negotiations with the company, said in a statement.
