Gone are the days of a mason carrying bricks to the nth floor of a building manually or even of architects creating designs on paper. With the advent of technology, the construction sector has become technology intensive and is adopting tech-based tools at a rapid pace. Here is a lowdown on how technology is impacting a sector that employs over 20 million people in India: Usage of drones Effective monitoring and tight vigil are essential for good quality construction, which is where the Drone technology steps in. Automated drones are useful and easily navigable within the perimeter of any project. With high precision cameras, the capacity to fly for hours at length and HD recording of the events makes drones a sharp supervisor. Drones are proving immensely beneficial in cases of hazardous or dangerous site conditions. Drone manufacturers are also making drones specifically for the construction industry. Very cost-effective for aerial mapping, topographical surveys, site surveys and construction monitoring; drones will play a key role in the construction sectors soon. BIM software, 3D modelling The construction industry has witnessed an exponential rise in the usage of 3D and Building Information Modelling software (BIM). The BIM software allows stakeholders to have a detailed, accurate yet virtual model of the under-construction or proposed building. The 3D modelling system allows engineers and architects to generate an automated project cost sheet that saves time. BIM software also helps in efficient sequencing. When the 3D software is coupled with Virtual Reality (VR) technology, stakeholders can see the project in a VR mode. Prefab technology Awareness towards reduced carbon emission has given a major thrust to sustainable construction techniques. This trend has given rise to pre-fabricated and ready to shift blocks, which can replace a wall or beam. These blocks are made of recycled construction waste, or recycled waste/plastic. They are also available at 60% of the cost of traditional materials. Although used at a limited scale currently, developers are increasing their usage in non-residential structures. Prefab blocks emit less carbon while manufacturing and are environmentally friendly. In addition, many startups have started offering ready-to-assemble homes, which will trigger a whole new era of construction. Construction management platforms The usage of construction management software, being provided as Software as a Service (SaaS) is increasingly gaining pace. Inefficient tracking and monitoring of a project leads to significant losses of man-hours and material. This eventually adds to the project cost while resources are left underutilised. Project management platforms are resolving this problem. Leading software companies are offering end-to-end construction management software for the construction industry. With a mobile-first approach, these applications ensure seamless communication and collaboration among project managers, site workers and owners. These apps relay a real-time information about the sites to managers. The usefulness of such applications and platforms can be gauged from the fact that in 2021, over 1% of the construction in India, valued at Rs 7000 crore, was executed by a leading construction management platform.
