A SET of prefabricated homes built just after the Second World War are set to be demolished and replaced with new social housing.

Basildon Council is looking for a firm to take on the £2.3m project, which will see five houses and eight new flats built off Pound Lane, Laindon.

The contract has been put out to tender and states all 13thirteen new homes will be for people on the social housing register.

The work will include clearing the current eight houses at the site, building the new homes, landscaping and creating parking space.

Jeff Henry, Conservative councillor for Laindon Park, is hopeful the scheme will give the area a much-needed lift.

He said: “These will be quality homes with adequate parking, which tends to be one parking space for a flat and two for houses.

“I think it’s a good thing for the town and believe there is also some visitor parking included in this too.

“The area is not without it’s challenges and it’s one of the original roads in Laindon.

“The development will help to tidy up the site.

“We are doubling the use of the site as these houses were built with huge gardens. It will create work and also is homes for the borough. There are plenty of people calling out for council homes.”

It comes after work on the seven new social homes, which consist of two one-bed flats, four two-bed houses and one three-bed house, was completed in Dry Street, in Basildon.

The homes were delivered in partnership withbetween Sempra Homes and Stonebond to provide extra housing for residents on the council’s waiting list.

Work on the project in Pound Lane is expected to begin some time in 2023.

Mr Henry added: “There are eight Airey homes there which are outdated and were built in 1947 and have really come to the end of their life.

“When it comes to the council housing waiting list and local plan, every little helps.

“ The development will really help to brighten up the area.”
