Famously unfiltered soccer star Jermaine Jones, now getting into the coaching and on-air analysis games, turned off a lot of fans in 2017 when he went on an Instagram tirade after L.A. Galaxy declined his option for the 2018 season — he went on to play briefly for Ventura County Fusion and the Ontario Fury before retiring — but he certainly turned a tidy profit on the recent sale of his secluded hideaway in the mountains above Malibu.
Purchased a bit more than two years ago for not quite $1.9 million, the hilltop spread went for a tad over $2.8 million. The property was listed with Arpie Petkus of Pinnacle Estate Properties and the buyer was represented by Shen Schulz of Sotheby’s International Realty.
Nestled into a quiet area of Corral Canyon, less than ten minutes up a winding road from the Pacific Coast Highway, the nearly four-acre spread is secreted down a long driveway and surrounded by unspoiled views of the Santa Monica Mountains. Originally built in 1980, the A-frame home has since been expanded and updated to include three bedrooms and three bathrooms in close to 2,600 square feet.
Huge picture windows provide cinematic views from just about every nook and cranny of the two-story home, while the voluminous living and dining areas, both with soaring exposed wood ceilings, flow into a spacious kitchen arranged around a huge butcher block-topped island snack bar.
With a lofted office/yoga space, a bonus room, a balcony, and a modern bathroom, the upstairs serves as a spacious retreat for the homeowner. Still, there might not be a better spot to relax, nap or whittle away a few hours with a book than on a covered patio outside one of the two main-floor guest bedrooms, where a huge bed hung from chains sways gently with the cool ocean breezes.
A wall of glass sliders in the living room opens a concrete terrace with a cantilevered pergola and a plunge-sized infinity-edge swimming pool that juts out into the landscape, while a lower terrace offers a whimsical, keyhole-shaped sunken fire pit with built-in banquette seating. In a wise fire prevention effort, landscaping around the house has been kept to a bare minimum.
The property also offers a custom storage shed and a free-standing prefab guest room paneled on the inside with reclaimed wood planks. Carved into the hillside, a staired path makes a picturesque curve down to a fully enclosed raised-bed garden — the enclosure keeps deer and other critters from pilfering the veggies — and a cute-as-a-button chicken coop. The vast plateau also has a sand sport field for kicking around the soccer ball.
Jones is neither a stranger to the tabloids — the former defensive midfielder’s bitter split from his longtime wife, former Miss Germany Sarah Gerthe, “involved restraining orders, a former ‘Baywatch’ actor and an AR-15 assault rifle” — nor the property gossip columns. He previously owned an Encino mansion scooped up in late 2011 for $2.5 million from Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott and sold in early 2018 for $3.2 million. And in the spring of 2017, he shelled out $4.875 million for a 12-acre estate in Calabasas that was quietly sold just over two years later at $4.95 million.
